Research Efforts of the EACL Project to Foster Football Inclusion for People with Intellectual Disabilities (PwID)

The European All are Champions League (EACL) project, funded by the European Union, has been at the forefront of promoting inclusivity in sports, particularly for people with intellectual disabilities (PwID). The project’s goal is to address the barriers PwID face in football activities and ensure that the sport becomes a powerful tool for social inclusion.

As part of this initiative, extensive research was conducted across multiple countries to develop practical guidelines and tools. The research focused on understanding the challenges PwID encounter and gathering insights from professionals, families, and caregivers involved in PwID football activities.

The research phase included:

  1. Desk Research: Analyzing existing good practices from educational and sports institutions.
  2. Field Research: Engaging in two focus groups—one with professionals working with PwID and another with PwID and their families.

This collaborative approach has laid the groundwork for the International Football Manual for Inclusion, an accessible and practical tool to help trainers, clubs, and families organize inclusive football activities. A simplified, “Easy-to-Read” version of the manual will also be made available to ensure it is accessible for PwID.

The EACL project emphasizes that sports can foster social inclusion, boost self-confidence, and contribute to the physical and mental well-being of PwID. Stay tuned for more updates as we work together to create a more inclusive future in football!
